What in the world is Rokk Skoool?
Rokk Skoool is Arizona's ORIGINAL institute for classroom music instruction for students ages 10-18. It was born from the startling realization of Rokk Skoool's founder - a lifelong musician and teacher - that, when it comes to musical instrument study, students tend to thrive in peer-group settings over one-on-one private lessons. This belies the standard thinking that private tutoring is best.
Why classroom instruction?
The biggest frustration for teachers of students participating in private musical instrument lessons is seeing their students show up for their periodic lessons unprepared, likely having not touched their instrument during the entire span of time since their previous lesson had ended. Perhaps, the most obvious reason this occurs for so many stems from the lack of motivation on the part of the student. Let's face it, a good majority of students that wind up in private lessons may not have been the ones who suggested the idea in the first place. Additionally, because most parents never know exactly what the student is learning, it becomes difficult for them to help their student with their studies from session to session.
Enter the classroom. A curious phenomenon occurs within the realm of musical instrument study when students are placed in a common setting at the same starting point and all have equal goals. They typically strive to stay ahead of the group with their studies. At the very least, they are motivated to stay even with the group. But this is still leaps and bounds ahead of the unmotivated student mentioned above who attends private lessons. The students in classroom settings simply push themselves to excel in an effort to keep from falling behind the level of accomplishment of their peers. While they are trying to keep up in class, they soon realize just how much fun they're having and soon parent and student observe that it's not a chore to take music lessons any longer!
Rokk Skoool classes always start up with students of identical skill levels. Students start at the same point of learning as their peers and all strive to reach the same class objectives together.
What is so novel about the Rokk Skoool concept?
This question is best answered by first examining just what is novel about private session tutoring. What precisely is the goal that your private session teacher has in mind for your student? Have you ever asked them that question?
If your student happens to be one that really digs their lessons with their tutor and has even, perhaps, expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the music industry, chances are their dreams don't include becoming a solo performer...
Not too many accomplished electric guitarists, bassists, drummers or vocalists ever wind up playing sold-out solo concerts. Solo pieces of music are great but the vast majority of music, and very likely the music your student really wants to play, is composed, performed and recorded by many instrumentalists and/or vocalists. Accompaniment is critical to becoming a truly accomplished musician. Students simply must have experience interacting musically with other musicians if they are to ever acquire a full command of their instrument. Although each and every Rokk Skoool class is geared toward preparing students for the Rokk Band class where they will gain the ultimate experience of full live accompaniment, each class is also a complete learning module within itself. The concepts of accompaniment are taught in every class.
Each Rokk Skoool class is designed with an end result in mind. There are no aimless months of lessons upon lessons where parents are left wondering if their student is learning anything at all. Whether your student sings or plays guitar, bass or drums, their classes each have specific objectives with in-class milestones along the way to measure progress. At Rokk Skoool, we have found that when objectives and goals are laid out before students in smaller chunks than they'd normally see, they tend to work much harder to achieve them all on their own and rarely need to be pushed. All Rokk Skoool classes are twelve weeks in duration. Classes meet once per week. Visit the Class Syllabi section for details on classes offered through Rokk Skoool.
